Airport Information

Welcome to the Rock Springs - Sweetwater County Airport's informational web site.  This site has been established to provide information to anybody who may want, or need, to know something about the airport or the Rock Springs area.

History

Click now to visit the Sweetwater County Historical MuseumOriginally built in 1942 as the Rock Springs Airport, the original setup included two airstrips, an east/west  runway (12-30) and a north/south runway (3-21).  A third runway (7-25) was added later and included lights to facilitate night operations.  Other improvements have included construction of another runway (9-27), the closing of two runways, (7-25) and (12-30), the addition of taxiways and service aprons, and the construction of both passenger and general aviation terminals.  In 1969 an agreement with Sweetwater County made the airport a joint-powers facility which was run by a 5 member board.  The new name of the airport became the Rock Springs - Sweetwater County Airport.

Before the airport was moved to the current location, it was located near the site of the present fair grounds.  In June of 1931 the airport was used as a waystop by Amelia Earhart on a publicity tour with an auto gyro.
